Story time!
"How I became an FF7 addict."
Once upon a time, my housemate and I were looking up Sailor Moon online, because we wanted to know more about Haruka (okay, long story there, too, but I won't bother with that now). We encountered a large collection of screen shots -- very nice ones, I might add (and I have to say that, before my hairdresser trimmed my hair too short - waaa!! - I did look a fair bit like Haruka, just not as tall). More interestingly, though, we came across links to Final Fantasy 7 fan sites.
I'm an FF addict. I've played all the American versions (including Mystic Quest - gah! why Square, why??? - and a translated FF5 on an emulator), but hadn't played 7 for two reasons: 1) PlayStation - didn't have one; and 2) dammit! that's not a sword Cloud Strife has slung across his back, it's a giant meat-cleaver!!! And you know "a hero is only as good as his . . . sword!" (right, Herc, right).
So I avoided the game until . . . fan sites. Fanfics. Fanart. Wow! Fan dedication to this game really impressed me. Obviously, I was missing out on something interesting. So FF3 got set aside while I surfed FF7 shrines (anyone know of a Cloud shrine? no? haven't found any - I'll explain this question in another ramble), read fanfics, drooled over some fanart (and grimaced at others, thinking "I could do better" - but I haven't yet, so don't pick on me about it) and generally got very addicted to the game without even having played it!
Then came a wonderful thing known as Income Tax Returns (okay, so it's not that wonderful, but useful). My housemate and I indulged ourselves and bought a PSX (dual shock of course), and all the bits and pieces to go with it - including the ding-dang RFU adapter - yes, I have an OLD tv - blame it on being a university student who can only afford to buy used stuff. And we got FF7 (new).
And we played, and played and played, . . . and final exams came and went . . . study? yes, I studied materia use and limit breaks and . . . heh, you get the idea. (I did manage to pass (if you care) and even managed a B+ overall for the term - I'm Canadian, don't ask me about my GPA, I don't have one).
So that's how I became addicted to FF7, and why the Lifestream exists. Blame it on the Internet and Square fans. Hey, while we're sharing the blame, though, a lot belongs to Square for making the game and the series, to Sony for the PSX, and to Bill Gates, anou . . . eto . . . because of Windows! (heh heh, had to get old Billy-boy in there somewhere. Down with Shindows!).
Disclaimer: Shindows is not my idea. Go to the Northern Crater, "Fanfics and Humour" section, under "Weird Crap," and "Fake Stuff" (yes, it's many clicks, but it's worth it!) and you'll find all the info about the Windows/Shinra connection. Believe it. It's a conspiracy.
