YAOI FAQ

If you don't know what it is, find out before you read it. Less flames that way. Save your energy for enjoying fics. ^_^

Doujinshi (dj) = manga or short story collections produced by fans using other people's characters.

m/m = male/male stories. Yes, that means gay. If you can't cope, I suggest you leave now.

Shounen ai = literally "boy love." Tends to emphasize the "love" over the "sex", ie the focus is on emotion and relationships.

Yaoi = The original definition of yaoi is: An acronym for "yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi": no mountain (ie peak; climax), no point, no meaning. No attempt at plot or meaning or character development. The point is sex, and the relationship outside the yaoi doesn't matter. Drawn/written by fans using other people's charas.
Nowadays, fanfic writers tend to use the term Yaoi in the broad sense for any m/m stories and fanfics, especially those containing lemons.

Lemon = written explicit sex in fanfics. A lime is lighter than a lemon, and usually just hints at the actual sex (fade to black sort of thing).
NC17 = non-consensual, violent situations.

Josei ni = an acronym for "Jooken-nashi, seigen-nashi, nikumi-nashi:" without conditions, without limits, without hate. I found this phrase at this site, which also has a compilation of common anime terms.

UST = unresolved sexual tension.

Gundam Wing
For those who are new to Gundam Wing and wondering what the numbers mean:

character name = number
Heero Yuy = 1
Duo Maxwell = 2
Trowa Barton (aka Nanashi or Triton Bloom) = 3
Quatre Raberba Winner = 4
Chang Wufei = 5
Zechs Marquise (Milliard Peacecraft) = 6
Treize Kushrenada = 13

Therefore, a 1x2 is a HeeroxDuo story, with Heero as the "top" or "seme."

The tendancy is, in the Japanese format, to use the "x" to indicate the relationship. North Americans also use "/" (as in Heero/Duo) to indicate the same. This is why N.A. "yaoi" writing tends to be called "slash" instead.
